Dear music lover,thank you for purchasing this Pro-Ject Audio Systems preamplifier.In order to achieve maximum performance and reliability you should study these instructions for use carefully.

Safety instructions

AC outlet voltages vary from country to country. Before connecting to the mains, make sure that the voltage in your area meets the voltage requirements printed on the power supply.The power supply is used to disconnect the unit from the mains. Make sure that the power supply is easily accessible at all times. Never handle the device or the power supply while your hands are wet or damp.Avoid letting liquids enter the device or the power supply. Never place any item containing liquid, such as a flower vase on or near the device. Never spill any liquid on the device or the power supply.Never place any naked flame sources, such as lighted candles on or near the device. The product shall not be used in damp or wet locations, next to a bathtub, sink, swimming pool or any other similar conditions.Tubes produce heat. Proper ventilation has to be guaranteed all the time. The unit must not be stacked.

Connectors

Make all connections whilst the preamplifier is disconnected from the power supply.Take care to connect the left and right channels correctly. The right channel is usually marked red, the left channel black or white.Wiring XLR sockets: 1 ground, 2 “hot” and 3 “cold”.Never use any other power supply than the one supplied with the unit except of Pro-Ject Power Boxes which can replace original power supplies.

Analog outA power amplifier or active loudspeakers can be connected to the output sockets marked Analog Out XLR (balanced connection) or RCA (unbalanced connection).

InputsIn1 USB: is dedicated to connect a Computer. Connect the USB-input of the unit (unit must be switched on) to a free USB-socket on your computer and turn it on/make sure it is powered on. The Pre Box RS digital will be automatically detected by the computer.

24Bit/192kHz driver (Windows® operating systems only)* For Windows® operating systems a 24Bit/192kHz driver has to be installed. Insert the included CD into the drive of you PC and follow the instructions.

After installing the 24Bit/192kHz driver, some setting have to be done.For example – Windows 7® operating system:→ Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Sound → Playback: select Project RS USB 2.0 Audio Out → Properties → Supported Formats: make sure nothing is assigned → Level → Sound: setting must be 100 → Enhancements: disable all enhancements → Advanced → Default Format: set to studio quality 24/192

Recommended settings for USB streaming:SAFE and ASIO buffer size 8192 or higher.

Please note: Connection should be made to an USB-socket of your computer directly. Connecting to USB-hubs or switches can cause problems.

In 2 Sonic: This input must be used together with Clock out BNC socket, which is only for connection to  Pro-Ject CD Box RS. Do not connect any other devices. You can find details in instruction manual for Pro-Ject CD Box RS.

In 3 to In 9: Pre Box RS digital offers 1 AES/EBU digital input (1x XLR) and 6 S/PDIF digital inputs (2x coaxial/RCA, 4x optical/Toslink). Digital sources like CD players, TV sets, satellite/cable receivers, streamers and also computers can be connected to these inputs.

In 10 Analog: This input is dedicated to source with analog output signal, e.g. phono preamplifier, tape deck, or FM tuner.

Mains power connectionConnect the low voltage plug from the power supply to the Power 18-20V DC socket before connecting the power supply to the mains.

Remote control

POWER turns the unit on or back into standbyMUTE activates and deactivates mute. If mute is engaged, the blue LED above the ON/OFF switch flashes.CH+/CH- select the inputs in turnVOL+/VOL- turns volume up and down1-9 access to a specific input directly

Front panel

Headphone connectionConnect the headphones to the socket on the front panel (Jack 6,3mm) and select proper impedance with the switch (OUT Ohm) next to headphone socket. (When using headphones, main outputs XLR & RCA willnot be muted.)

To switch on from standby or to standbyThe switch on the left hand side of the front panel turns the unit on or back into standby. The blue LED above the stand-by switch shows that the unit is switched on.

! We recommend to set the volume control to minimum, prior to switching on.

VolumeAdjust the volume to the desired level, using the large knob on the front panel.

Input selectorAfter the unit is powered on, operating the switch marked with ▲ ▼ selects the inputs. The selected input will be shown by the corresponding LED.

DAC selectorSwitch to DAC 1 for 24bits/192kHz and DSD capability or to DAC 2 for 32bits/384kHz support.

Filter selectorTwo filters are available. Switch between FIL 1 and FIL 2 to select desired filter.

Output stage selectorThe switch on the very right side select between solid state output stage and tube output stage. Selecting of tube for the first time after start of the unit requires heat up period.

Sampling frequency LED indicatorsOn the front panel 8 LED´s indicate current sampling frequency of the incoming digital signal. Another 2 LED´s for DSD indicate DSD64 or DSD128.

DSD settingsPro-Ject Pre Box RS digital is capable of playing DSD64 and DSD128 files. For playing DSD files a dedicated software player is required, which is also capable to play these files (for example JRiver Mediacenter, Foobar2000 etc.).Required settings for DSD:DSD Playback Method: DoP (DSD over PCM), DoP Marker 0x05/0xFA.

DSD requires high data rate and slower computers may have problems with playing DSD.

Replacing batteriesProceed as follows:

  • Unlock and slide open the battery case cover
  • Replace the battery.Make sure the battery is the right way round !
  • Close the battery case cover

Battery type: 1 x CR2032 / 3V or 1 x CR2025 / 3V

Do not dispose the batteries as ordinary domestic refuse. Please dispose your exhausted batteries at the appropriate collection sites – usually located at supermarkets and drugstores.
