STITCH EXPLANATIONS
Cl (6 double crochet cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops rem on hook), (yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook) 5 times (7 loops rem on hook), yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.hdc2tog (hdc 2 sts together) (Yarn over, insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook – 1 st decreased.rev-sc (reverse single crochet) Single crochet worked from left to right (right to left, if left-handed). Insert hook into next stitch to the right (left), under loop on hook, and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
NOTES
- Clutch is made from 73 Flowers. 65 Flowers are sewn together for body of Clutch and 8 Flowers are sewn together as embellishment for the flap.
- 65 Flowers are pieced together like a puzzle, following Body Chart. The piece is then folded and seamed.
- Flap is worked back and forth in rows beg along back top edge of body.
- 8 Flowers are sewn together following Flap Chart then sewn to flap.
FLOWERS (make 73 – 37 with A and 36 with B)
Note: Leave a 4 in. (10 cm) yarn tail at beg of 4 A-colored and 4 B-colored Flowers. The tails will be used later to sew these 8 flowers to the flap.Wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop. Carefully slip ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), 6 hdc in ring; join with sl st in first hdc – you will have 6 hdc in this rnd. Gently but firmly, pull the tail to tighten center of ring.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as a ch-3), Cl in same st as joining sl st, * ch 3, sl st in next st, ch 3, Cl in same st; rep from * 4 more times, ch 3; sl st in next st (same st as joining sl st) – 6 Cl (petals).Fasten off, leaving a 10 in. (25.5 cm) tail for sewing Flowers tog. Set aside the 8 flap Flowers, with the 4 in. (10 cm) beg tails.
Assemble Body
Sew 65 Flowers tog following Body Chart. Beg with lower row and work upwards, alternating rows of 6 Flowers and 7 Flowers. Fit Flowers together like puzzle pieces, placing one petal of one Flower in between 2 petals of each neighboring Flower. Weave yarn tail to very top of petal. Sew petal to the sl st in the valley between petals of neighboring Flower then sew the ch-3’s on the sides of the petals together. Weave in ends on WS of Flowers. Continue until all Flowers have been sewn together.
Fold piece in half with RS facing in. Align the Flowers along one side edge, placing petals along front side edge into valleys between petals along back side edge. Pin the side shut (see photo) and whip stitch side seam. Rep to sew opposite side seam. Turn piece RS out.
FLAP
From RS, join A with sl st to beg of back top edge of Body.
Row 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st in this row and in all following rows), beg in same st as joining sl st, working 78 hdc evenly spaced along back top edge (working 13 hdc along the edge of each of the 6 Flowers) – 78hdc.Row 2: Ch 2, turn, * hdc in next st, hdc2tog; rep from * across – 52 hdc. Row 3: Ch 2, turn, * hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog; rep from * across – 39 hdc. Rows 4-8: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.Row 9: Ch 2, turn, (hdc2tog) twice, hdc in each st to last 4 sts, (hdc2tog) twice – 35 hdc.Row 10: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across.Rows 11-20: Rep Rows 9 and 10 for 5 more times – 15 hdc in Row 19. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Edging
From RS, join B with sl st at beg of flap edge, so that you are ready to work along the flap edge left to right (right to left if you are left-handed), ch 1, rev-sc evenly spaced all the way along flap edge. Fasten off.
Assemble Flap Flowers
With 10 in. (25.5 cm) ending tails, sew 8 flap Flowers tog following Flap Chart, in same manner as for body of Clutch. Weave in ends, leaving 4 in. (10 cm) beg tails free. Using photograph as a guide to placement, with 4 in. (10 cm) beg tails, sew centers of Flowers to flap.
FINISHING
Weave in remaining yarn ends.
