ADDITIONAL MATERIALSDouble pointed knitting needles size 11 (8 mm), set of 5
GAUGE10 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) over Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd).BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
NOTEDesigner worked the Hat on double pointed knitting needles - if you prefer, you can cast on with a size 11 (8 mm) circular needle, 16 in. (40.5 cm) long, then switch to double pointed needles to work the Shape Crown section.
HATCast on 48 sts.Divide sts onto 4 needles, with 12 sts on each needle.
Place marker for beginning of rnd.Join by knitting the first st on the left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.Slip the marker at the end of each rnd.
Rnd 1: *K2, p2, rep from * around.Rep Rnd 1 until piece measures about 5 1/2 in. (14 cm) from beginning.
Change to Stockinette st worked in the rnd (k every rnd) and work until piece measures about 9 in. (23 cm) from beginning.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)Next Rnd: *K6, k2tog, rep from * around - 42 sts.Knit 1 rnd.Next Rnd: *K5, k2tog, rep from * around - 36 sts.Knit 1 rnd.Next Rnd: *K4, k2tog, rep from * around - 30 sts.Knit 1 rnd.Next Rnd: *K3, k2tog, rep from * around - 24 sts.Knit 1 rnd.Next Rnd: *K2, k2tog, rep from * around - 18 sts.Knit 1 rnd.Next Rnd: K2tog around - 9 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail.Thread tail into blunt needle and then through remaining sts.Pull to close top of Hat and knot.
FINISHINGWeave in ends.
