WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF ROCK COLLECTING AND JEWELRY MAKING

The aim of rock tumbling and polishing is to produce gemstones ground and polished to their natural beauty. There are many projects you can do with the polished stones. You may decide to mount them in a display case. You can decorate boxes, use them in arts and crafts projects and, of course, make jewelry. This kit contains rings so you can apply a  small amount of glue (not included) to the stone and setting and glue together. You can use tape to hold the pieces in position while the glue is drying. Allow drying overnight.

Getting Started and Helpful Tips

  1. Locate an area in your home where the continuous sound and disturbing noise from the tumbling action is minimum.
  2. Level the tumbler on a flat corrugated board or similar non-slippery material. Because of vibrations during operations, the tumbler may have a tendency to “migrate”. You can place a small weight next to it to prevent this.
  3. The barrel cover can be identified by the embossed OPEN, CLOSE and ARROW markings on its surface. After placing the gemstones, polishing powder, and an adequate amount of water into the barrel, securely close the cover by turning it clockwise. See Procedures and Tips on Tumbling and Polishing Gemstones below.
  4. Always place the barrel into the cradle of the tumbler with the barrel cover facing the left-hand side as it will not fit the other way round by design. See the figure below on the left.
  5. Carefully fix the clear top cover into the top of the tumbler by aligning its front and rear snap locks into the recesses on the tumbler. See the figure below on the right.
  6. Press ON/OFF button and select the DAY you prefer to start up the tumbler, and you should will see the barrel start rotating if everything is normal.

Note: The barrel will not start rotating when the top clear cover is not in position. You have to press the ON/OFF button again whenever the top clear cover is removed and replaced.

Procedures and Tips on Tumbling and Polishing Gemstones

  1. Start with 1/2 bag of gemstones.Rinse raw gemstones to wash away dust and dirt.
  2. Place the gemstones in the rock tumbler barrel. You DO NOT need to add the grit polishing powder yet…that comes later.
  3. Add water to just cover top of the gemstones. Be careful not to let any grit (polishing powder) get in the rim of the barrel as it might cause leaks in the seal.
  4. Replace barrel cover firmly secured in the groove inside it. Be sure the cover is locked into place by aligning
  5. Put barrel onto base of the machine. Plug the machine into a wall outlet, press ON/OFF button and select the DAY you prefer to start up the machine. Check your barrel after  24 hours. See that the watercolor is gray and sludgy and that the water is above the gemstones. If it is not, add more water. This cycle takes between 1 to 2 days. It is always better to grind longer if in doubt.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 every 2 days until stones are smooth.
  7. FINAL POLISHING STEP: When the surface of gemstones becomes smooth, add ½ packet of the grit polishing powder and continue to tumbler until the best-desired shinny result – about 1 to 2 days.
